Can plaques be used outdoors?

How is the QR code engraved?
The QR code is laser-engraved directly into the surface of your plaque, whether steel or acrylic. This permanent engraving process creates a high-contrast, easily scannable code that will not fade, peel, or wear off over time. Each QR code is unique to your memorial and is tested before shipping to ensure perfect functionality.
Will the QR code fade or wear off?
No. Because the QR code is laser-engraved into the material itself (not printed or applied as a sticker), it is permanent and will not fade, peel, or wear off. The engraving creates a physical change in the material that lasts for the lifetime of the plaque. We guarantee the QR code will remain scannable for as long as you own the plaque.

How quickly can I activate my memorial?

Why is there a 12-month commitment?
The 12-month minimum commitment ensures the longevity and permanence of your memorial, which is central to our mission. Memorial plaques are meant to honor loved ones for years to come, and this commitment protects the integrity of that purpose. Additionally, because we handcraft each plaque specifically for you and give you instant access to create your memorial page, the commitment period ensures we can continue providing high-quality products and reliable service to all our customers.
How does automatic renewal work?
Your subscription automatically renews at the end of each billing cycle to ensure your memorial page stays active without interruption. Here’s how it works: Seven (7) days before your renewal date, we’ll send you a friendly reminder email letting you know when your payment will be processed. On your renewal date, your saved payment method will be charged automatically, and your memorial remains active for the next billing period. No action is required from you unless you want to update your payment method or make changes to your subscription. You can manage your payment methods anytime through your account portal at elegantmemorials.ca.
Can I change my subscription plan?
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your subscription plan at any time by visiting the Manage Subscriptions page under your account. Plan changes will take effect at your next renewal date. For example, if you’re on a monthly plan and want to switch to annual to save money and get free shipping, we can make that change for your next billing cycle.

When will my card be charged?
Your initial charge is processed immediately when you place your order. After that, your payment method will be automatically charged according to your selected billing cycle: monthly plans are charged every 30 days, quarterly plans every 90 days, semi-annual plans every 180 days, and annual plans every 365 days from your subscription start date. You’ll always receive a reminder email 7 days before each charge.
What happens if my payment fails?
If a renewal payment fails, we have an automatic retry system to help ensure your memorial stays active. Here’s the complete process:
- Day 0: Payment attempt fails – you receive an immediate email notification with instructions to update your payment method.
- Day 1: Grace Period begins – your memorial remains fully active with all features while we attempt to resolve the payment issue.
- Day 3: Automatic retry #1 – we attempt to charge your card again and send a reminder email if it fails.
- Day 6: Automatic retry #2 – third attempt with email notification if it fails.
- Day 9: Automatic retry #3 (final attempt) – final warning email if payment still cannot be processed.
- Days 1-30: Grace Period (Full Access) – your memorial remains fully active with all editing capabilities while you update your payment method.
- Days 31-90: Grace Period (View-Only) – memorial enters “view-only” mode where all content remains visible but editing is locked.
- Day 91+: Basic Mode – if no payment is received after 90 days, your memorial transitions to Basic Mode showing limited content (profile photo, name, dates, and one gallery photo).
You can update your payment method anytime through your account portal to immediately restore full access and avoid any service interruption.

How long is the grace period?
Our grace period lasts a total of 90 days after your service expires (whether due to payment failure or choosing not to renew), giving you ample time to update your payment information without losing access to your memorial. The grace period is divided into two phases:
- Days 1-30: Full Access – all memorial features remain active including editing, uploading photos, embedding videos, accepting tributes, and managing your memorial content. You’ll receive friendly reminder emails about updating your payment method.
- Days 31-90: View-Only Mode – your memorial remains fully visible to all visitors showing all photos, tributes, timeline, embedded videos, and custom design, but editing and uploading capabilities are temporarily locked until payment is restored.
After 90 days without payment, your memorial enters Basic Mode (day 91+) where it remains accessible but with limited features. All your content is preserved indefinitely and can be fully restored by updating your payment method, completing a buyout, or renewing your subscription.
What email reminders will I receive?
We send different notification schedules depending on whether your service expired due to payment failure or intentional non-renewal:
For Payment Failures:

What happens if I don’t pay during the grace period?

Can I end my subscription before 12 months?
Yes, through our cost-saving buyout option. While all subscriptions require a 12-month minimum commitment, we understand that circumstances can change. If you need to stop recurring charges before completing your 12-month commitment, we offer a buyout that’s based on our annual plan pricing. The buyout amount is calculated as: Annual plan price minus what you’ve already paid = your buyout amount. This is often significantly cheaper than continuing your current payment plan! What happens to my memorial after I buy out my subscription?
After completing a buyout, you’ve fulfilled your 12-month commitment early and stopped all recurring charges. Your memorial remains active with full premium features (unlimited photos, embedded videos from YouTube/Vimeo, tributes, timeline, custom design) through your original renewal date.
When your renewal date arrives, you’ll have two options:
- Renew at the annual renewal price to continue with full premium features, or
- Don’t renew and your memorial will follow our grace period system:
- Days 1-30: Fully accessible with all features
- Days 31-90: View-only mode
- Day 91+: Basic Mode (showing profile photo, name, dates, and one photo)
The buyout essentially converts your payment plan into an annual subscription for the first year, and you’re then eligible for annual renewal at the renewal price (no plaque cost since you already own it).

For example, if you purchased on January 15, 2025, you can cancel anytime after January 15, 2026. After the 12-month commitment ends, you can cancel with 30 days’ notice. If you cancel and don’t renew at your renewal date, your memorial will follow the grace period system (30 days full access, 60 days view-only, then Basic Mode after 90 days).
How do I cancel after 12 months?
After your 12-month commitment ends, you can cancel by logging into your memorial editor, navigating to “Subscription Settings,” and following the cancellation process. You can also contact our support team to request cancellation. Please provide at least 30 days’ notice before your next billing date. If you cancel with less than 30 days’ notice, you’ll be charged for one additional billing cycle, after which your subscription will end and your memorial will enter the grace period system. Remember: cancellation means your memorial will eventually enter Basic Mode, but you can choose the buyout option instead to keep all premium features active permanently.
Are refunds available?
No, all payments are final and non-refundable. This includes your initial purchase and all renewal payments. Because we give you immediate access to create your memorial page and we handcraft your physical plaque specifically for you, we cannot offer refunds for any reason. This policy is clearly stated during checkout and in our Terms and Conditions.
What happens to my memorial page if I cancel?
When you cancel after completing your 12-month commitment, your subscription remains active until the end of your current paid billing period. After that date, if you don’t renew, your memorial page will follow our grace period system: Days 1-30: Full access with all features (you can still edit, upload photos, and embed videos). Days 31-90: View-only mode (all content remains visible to visitors, but editing and uploading are locked). Day 91+: Basic Mode – your memorial remains accessible via QR code showing profile photo, name, dates, and one photo, but advanced features (full gallery, embedded videos, timeline, tributes, custom design) are locked. Your memorial stays online in Basic Mode indefinitely and is never deleted. All your content (photos, embedded video links, stories, tributes) is preserved and can be fully restored by renewing your subscription. What can I add to my memorial page?
You can create a rich, multimedia tribute including: unlimited photos with captions and dates, videos embedded from YouTube or Vimeo (simply paste the video link rather than uploading large files), written stories and memories, important dates and milestones, biographical information, favorite quotes or sayings, and visitor tributes from family and friends. You can organize content by timeline, create photo galleries, and customize the layout and theme to reflect your loved one’s personality.
How many photos and videos can I upload?
You can upload unlimited photos to your memorial page. There are no restrictions on the number of images you can add. We recommend using high-quality images (at least 1200px wide) for the best display quality. Individual photo file size limit is 10MB per image to ensure fast loading times for visitors. For videos, you can embed unlimited videos from YouTube or Vimeo by simply pasting the video link – this keeps your memorial page fast and doesn’t use our server storage.
Can visitors leave tributes?
Yes! Visitors can leave written tributes, share memories, and express condolences on your memorial page. You have complete control over this feature – you can choose to automatically approve all tributes, manually review and approve each one before it appears, or disable visitor tributes entirely. You can also edit or remove any tribute at any time. This allows family and friends to contribute to the memorial while you maintain full control over what appears on the page.
How do I control privacy settings?
You have full control over who can view your memorial page. Choose from three privacy levels: Public (anyone with the link or QR code can view), Password-Protected (only people with the password you set can view – perfect for keeping the memorial private to family and close friends), or Hidden (only you can view and manage – useful for preparing content before making it public). You can change these settings at any time through your account dashboard.
Can I password-protect my memorial?
Yes! Password protection is a built-in feature. When you enable password protection, visitors who scan the QR code or click the memorial link will be prompted to enter a password before they can view the content. You set the password and can share it only with people you want to have access. You can change the password or remove password protection at any time. This is ideal for keeping memorials private to family members only.
Can I edit content after publishing?
Absolutely! You can edit, add, or remove content from your memorial page at any time. There are no restrictions on updates. Add new photos as you find them, update stories, modify dates, change privacy settings, approve new tributes, or reorganize your memorial layout whenever you wish. Your memorial page is a living tribute that can grow and evolve over time.

How does the QR code work?
When someone uses their smartphone camera or QR code scanning app to scan the code on your memorial plaque, they’re instantly directed to your online memorial page. The QR code contains a unique URL that links specifically to your memorial. No app download is required – modern smartphones automatically recognize and can scan QR codes using their built-in camera app.
What devices can scan the QR code?
Any modern smartphone can scan QR codes. This includes iPhones (iOS 11 and later), Android phones (Android 9 and later), and most tablets. Users simply open their camera app, point it at the QR code, and tap the notification that appears to visit the memorial page. The QR code works across all devices and all web browsers, ensuring maximum accessibility for visitors.
Does the QR code expire?
No, the QR code itself never expires. It’s permanently engraved on your plaque and will always contain the link to your memorial. The QR code remains functional regardless of your subscription status – it will always direct visitors to your memorial page. However, what visitors see when they scan depends on your account status: with an active subscription, they see the full memorial with all features; during the grace period (days 1-90), they see all content but with some editing restrictions; in Basic mode (day 91+), they see limited content (profile photo, name, dates, and one photo). If you complete a buyout, the QR code provides full access to all memorial features permanently. The QR code engraving is guaranteed for life – if there’s ever a defect in the engraving, we’ll replace your plaque at no cost.
What happens when someone scans the QR code?
When someone scans the QR code on your memorial plaque, they’re taken directly to your memorial page in their web browser. If the memorial is public, they immediately see the content. If it’s password-protected, they’ll be prompted to enter the password. The page is mobile-optimized, so it looks beautiful on smartphones. Visitors can view photos, read stories, watch videos, and leave tributes (if you’ve enabled that feature). They can also easily share the memorial link with others.
Can I test the QR code before my plaque arrives?
Yes! As soon as you create your memorial page, you’ll receive a direct link that you can share and test immediately. This link is the same destination that your engraved QR code will direct to when your plaque arrives. You can verify that your memorial page is working perfectly and share it with family and friends even before your physical plaque is delivered.

How long does production take?
Each memorial plaque is handcrafted to order by skilled Canadian craftspeople. Production typically takes 2-3 business days from the date you place your order. During peak periods (holidays, memorial season), production may take slightly longer, but we’ll always communicate expected timelines. Remember, you can start creating and sharing your online memorial immediately while your physical plaque is being crafted!
When will my plaque ship?
Your plaque will ship within 3-5 business days of your order. Once it ships, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking information so you can follow your package’s journey. We ship via Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, or DHL depending on your location and the shipping method selected at checkout.
Do you ship outside Canada?
Yes! We ship worldwide. While we’re proudly based in Canada and serve customers from coast to coast (British Columbia to Newfoundland and everywhere in between, including all territories), we also ship internationally to any country. International shipping times and costs vary by destination. Contact us for a shipping quote to your location, and we’ll provide you with delivery timeframes and costs specific to your country.
Is shipping free?
Shipping is FREE for annual subscription customers within Canada! If you choose a monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual plan, shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your delivery address and selected shipping method. Standard shipping within Canada typically ranges based on location. This is one of many reasons the annual plan offers the best overall value. For international orders, additional shipping charges apply based on destination, and any applicable customs duties, taxes, or import fees are the responsibility of the recipient. What if my plaque arrives damaged?
We take great care in packaging your memorial plaque to prevent damage during shipping, but if your plaque arrives damaged, please contact us immediately with photos of the damage and your order number. We’ll arrange for a replacement plaque at no cost to you. Please report any damage within 7 days of delivery to qualify for a free replacement.
Can I track my shipment?
Yes! Once your plaque ships, you’ll receive a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number. You can use this tracking number to follow your package’s progress on the carrier’s website (Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, or DHL). You’ll be able to see when your package is out for delivery and approximately when it will arrive.

How do I access my memorial page?
You can access your memorial page by logging into your elegantmemorials.ca account using the email address and password you created during checkout. Once logged in, go to My QR codes memorial dashboard where you can edit content, manage settings, view analytics, and update your subscription. You can also access your memorial directly using the unique link provided in your confirmation email.
I forgot my password – what do I do?
No problem! Click the “Forgot Password” link on the login page. Enter your email address, and we’ll send you a password reset link. Click the link in the email, create a new password, and you’ll be back in your account immediately. If you don’t receive the reset email within a few minutes, check your spam folder or contact support for assistance.
Can I update my payment method?
Yes! You can update your payment method at any time through your memorial editor. Log in to your account, go to “Subscription Settings,” and click “Update Payment Method.” You’ll be securely redirected to our payment processor where you can add a new card or update your payment information. Your new payment method will be used for all future renewal charges. We strongly recommend updating your payment method before it expires to avoid any service interruptions or entering a grace period.

What happens if the QR code stops working?
If your QR code stops scanning properly, here’s what to check: First, verify that your subscription is active by logging into your memorial editor. Even in Basic Mode (day 91+ without payment), the QR code should still function and direct visitors to your memorial page showing limited content. If your subscription is current or in Basic Mode but the QR code still doesn’t scan, try gently cleaning the plaque surface with a soft, damp cloth – sometimes dirt, fingerprints, or residue can interfere with smartphone cameras reading the code. Ensure there’s adequate lighting when scanning. If the QR code still doesn’t work after cleaning, contact us immediately with photos of your plaque and a description of the issue. We guarantee the QR code engraving for life – if there’s a manufacturing defect in the engraving itself (not damage from misuse), we’ll replace your plaque at no cost to you, regardless of how long you’ve owned it.

How do I log into my account?
Visit the home page and click “Login” or “My Account” in the top navigation menu. Enter the email address you used during checkout and your password. You’ll be taken to your account dashboard where you can manage your memorial page, update settings, view your subscription details, and access customer support. If this is your first time logging in, use the temporary password sent to your email after purchase.
Can I have multiple memorial plaques?
Yes! You can purchase and manage multiple memorial plaques under a single account. Each plaque you order has its own unique QR code and completely separate memorial page – they don’t share content or settings. If you want to create memorials for multiple loved ones (parents, grandparents, siblings, friends), simply place a new order for each individual plaque through our shop. You’ll be able to view and manage all your memorials from a single account dashboard for convenience. Important note: Each memorial requires its own separate subscription (or buyout), as each memorial page operates independently. You can have different subscription plans for different memorials if desired (for example, annual for one, monthly for another).
Can family members access the memorial?
Yes, family members can view the memorial page in multiple ways:
- By scanning the QR code on the physical plaque
- By using the direct link you share with them
- By entering the password if you’ve enabled password protection
Viewing access is available to anyone you share the link or password with. However, full editing access (uploading photos, managing tributes, changing settings) is limited to the account owner for security reasons.
If you want another family member to help manage and edit the memorial, you have two options:

How do I update my contact information?
Log into your memorial editor and click on your name or profile icon, then navigate to “Account Settings” or “Profile.” In this section, you can update your email address, phone number, billing address, and shipping address for future orders. Be sure to click “Save” or “Update” after making changes. Important: If you update your email address, you’ll receive a verification email at your new email address – you must click the confirmation link in that email to complete the change. This security measure ensures no one can change your email without your permission. Keeping your contact information current is crucial because we send important notifications to your registered email, including renewal reminders (7 days before billing), payment failure alerts, shipping notifications, and account security updates.
