In Loving Memory
Culinary Master, Loving Grandmother, Ambassador of Cantonese Cuisine. Mei Lin Wong was born on the eighth day of the eighth month in 1963 in Guangzhou, China – double luck according to Chinese tradition. She would need it, and she would create it for others. Mei Lin learned to cook at her grandmothers side in their tiny kitchen, mastering Cantonese cuisine by age 10. She immigrated to Toronto in 1985, taking a job as a dishwasher in a Chinatown restaurant. Within two years, she was head chef. Within ten, she owned her own restaurant – Lucky Eight – which would become a beloved institution for 30 years. Mei Lin was known for her exacting standards, her generous portions, and her belief that every dish should be made with the same care youd make for your own family. Mei Lin suffered a stroke on September 5, 2024, and passed away peacefully. She was 61.
